Descripcion
Perennial herbs, caespitose, stems prostrate, 3–10 (–20) cm, branched, more densely leafy at base and more loosely in upper part, whitish-woolly. Leaves 6–8 (–25) × (2.5–)4.5–6(–10) mm, broadly obovate, attenu ate at base, apex rounded, mucronate; concolorous, whitish-woolly on both surfaces; trichomes long, eglan dular, eseptate, filiform from base to tip. Capitula many, in headlike clusters, subtended by obovate leaves. In volucre narrowly campanulate, 3–5 × 2.5–4 mm. Phyl laries 12 to 20, 4-seriate, lamina light brown at apex; outer phyllaries 2–3.8 × 1–1.5 mm, ovate, apex acute to acuminate, lanuginose; inner phyllaries 3–4.5 × 0.5–1 mm, oblong-lanceolate, apex acute or subacute, glabrous. Pistillate florets (9 to)14 to 18, corolla 2.2–3 mm. Bisexual florets 3 to 5, corolla 2.5–3 mm, 5-lobed (rarely 4- or 6-lobed), anthers 5. Achenes 0.5–1.5 mm, pilose, with clavate duplex trichomes. Pappus bristles 2.5–3 mm.
Distribucion y Habitat
Gamochaeta alpina is known from southern Chile (Freire et al., 2016) and southwestern Argentina (Cabrera, 1971; Freire & Iharle- gui, 2014). It grows in the Subantarctic dominion (Cabrera & Willink, 1973) at elevations between 700 and 2000 m.

Observaciones: Recognition. The cluster analysis (Fig. 3A) placed
Gamochaeta alpina with G. nivalis and G. serpyllifolia.
These species are caespitose with prostrate stems, con
colorous leaves, and capitula arranged in headlike clus
ters. Gamochaeta alpina mainly differs by its achene
trichomes that are clavate (vs. globose or subclavate in
G. serpyllifolia and G. nivalis).
